How To Work Online – And Get Paid for it

Laptop on tableIf you’re interested in learning how to work online and get paid for it, this page will help you get started.

Just over one year ago I had no idea about anything to do with building websites or SEO or how to make an online business, yet now here I am, creator and owner of three niche websites . . . and that’s just the start.

In this post I’ll show you how to get started and where to learn and get support. Why do you need support? Because if you want to succeed there’s loads to learn and you can’t just build a website and have success falling down from the sky. No, you need to take action . . .

Affiliate Marketing – What is it?

If you want to work online and get paid for it, one of the best routes you can choose is affiliate marketing. Why? Because for very little cost you can start up your own business and make a living online.

An affiliate site offers its readers extra knowledge about products or services via reviews and recommendations. The readers learn more about the product they’re interested in and can make a more informed purchase. When they buy, you get a commission.

It’s a win-win situation for everybody – you get to make a living from writing about what you love, the company gets the product promoted  and the customer buys the product at the same, normal price, but with extra information.

How to Learn Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is an art form and many people try it without success. So the question, How to learn Affiliate Marketing and succeed is a really important one to ask yourself.

The answer is, don’t do things by halves. Throw yourself into it and roll up your sleeves, ready to learn. Find the place where you can learn and get support and trust 100%.

Avoid Affiliate Marketing Scams – Check them out First

When you want to start and you find a site offering you a glorious future online, it’s pretty easy to get swept away with the enthusiasm of the moment and find yourself signing up to an expensive affiliate marketing scam.

We will make you a millionaire scam

Check everything out on Google thoroughly before you get in too deep with any program.

The first program I found was The Six Figure Mentors, created by Stuart Ross and Jay Kubassek. I got really excited. I mean I could fall in love with the whole concept that was being sold to me. That was until I checked it out . . .

They have tons of videos and pretty soon I was convinced I could make heaps of money online . . . which of course, I can.

The videos are well presented, interesting and convincing. He’s got a nice-to-listen-to, I’m-a-genuine-honest-type-of-guy voice. I became totally inspired to join them; I was ready to go. But first I went to Google to do my research.

google research

Before paying for anything on the internet, do your research. Double check – and check again. What you see is not always what you get.

So I Googled Six Figure Mentors extensively and what I found was so disappointing that I felt I’d been a bit cheated. They’d offered me the ‘free’ membership followed by a monthly fee of $29. And I thought that sounded doable.

However, that turned out to be completely untrue.

Affiliate Marketing Programs are Not Always What They Seem

I was so shocked. When you listen to Stuart Ross telling you how successful you can be, it’s easy to fall in love with his sincerity and the dream of your success. And yet the truth behind it is that after paying $29 per month you then have to upgrade to a one off payment of $297 plus $97 monthly if you want to access the material.

That’s serious money and completely obscured in their advertising.

Here’s is a breakdown of their charges at the time of writing this article: $29.95 starter monthly fee followed by $297 one-off payment for the basic membership plus $97 per month. Once you’re a member there are also other products which you can only access if you pay more for, including but not limited to the Digital Experts Academy: $2.500 for Silver, $8.000 Gold, $11.000 platinum and $20.000 for Black

So What’s Next in How to Learn Affiliate Marketing?

I was pretty disappointed but I didn’t give up my search and the next place I came across (luckily for me) was Wealthy Affiliate.

The name Wealthy Affiliate sounded a bit like another get-rich-quick scheme to me, so I was sceptical at first. I read all the reviews I could find but I didn’t find any serious negative ones. And that’s when I decided to give it a try with the free membership and that I really had nothing to lose by giving it a go.

So I signed up for the free account and within moments of being inside I was inspired. I set about doing the level-one training and soon had my first website up and running.

And this was meeee who knew nothing about anything before!

For me, Wealthy Affiliate is the best place to be. That’s my secret which isn’t so secret. WA is a community where you can learn and learn, and learn some more.

And if you sign up for premium membership you’ll only pay one membership fee – no surprises, no upgrades, no extra payments to access the materials.

It’s been a life-changer for me.

Because the education is intensive, you learn loads in one week and before the week was out I already knew that I wanted to sign up for the Premium membership, so I took advantage of the first discount and my first paying month cost me $19 . . . and then I signed up for the year because I knew this was what I’d been looking for.

Setting up a business online is the only business you can start with such a small amount of investment. So learning how to work online shouldn’t cost you heaps of money.

You’ll have to pay something of course, because you’ll need a website, which will need a domain name and a host. But those costs are minimal compared to any other ‘real’ business set-up costs.

Getting Down to Working Online

Working online is still work. You have to keep up with your responsibilities, set yourself deadlines, put in the time.

One major difference between working online or working in a physical job is that you can always tweak things to get better results. So if you don’t get a good ranking with a post, analyse why and make the necessary changes. Persevere and you’ll see the differences in your outcome.

It’s very empowering to know that you’re in control of your own life. Not just because you’re your own boss, but because when you work online, if you don’t get the results you’re after, you can always do something about it.

Steps to Working Online and What You Need to Achieve:

  1. Domain name
  2. Niche website
  3. Useful & interesting content
  4. Traffic
  5. Conversions
  6. Results

So you see, if you aren’t getting results you’ll go back to the other points and analyse them, tweak them and improve them. It’s a chain result of the building blocks that went before.

Remember, when you’re writing your content, the goal is to offer useful and interesting information. Not to sell something. I’m not selling anything except my experience. And I’m giving that for free.

As an online marketer your day will be full. There’s always work to do. Always more content to write. Here’s a brief breakdown of what your virtual desk will hold for you when you work online:

Daily Online Work:

  • Check and answer all comments and emails.
  • Research new keywords and articles.
  • Check out affiliate programmes for new topics.
  • Research all products that you’re going to promote.
  • Keep updating posts.
  • Write new content for new posts.
  • Design the layout and add images to new posts.
  • Publish posts, check links work, proof read and edit if necessary.
  • Search for information to improve your knowledge on any areas of SEO web building etc.
  • Keep up to date and informed on Google and other search engines.
  • Be active on relevant social media sites.

This can become an all-day occupation but the upside is that as long as you put in the time, you can work any hours you like from wherever you like.

Set yourself a structure for the day. You should be posting to your website regularly. Once the skeleton website has been built and you have your fixed pages in place, choose how often you can post and try to stick to it.

You should aim to be consistent, as this will help boost your Google rank and the best would be to post every day. Recommended would be 2-3 times a week. You might work for hours and hours but if you enjoy the work, who minds?

I have two other sites you can visit me on; Love Positive Thinking and Love Vegetarian Life.

Good luck with your new venture. All I ask is that if you have any thoughts please leave me a comment and let me know how you get on.

How to Add Images to a Website

A web site needs great pictures, but where do the images come from? This page will show you how to add images to a website and where to source them.

Great images help keep visitors interested in your site.

Great images help keep people on your site

Golden Rule #1

Don’t copy images that you find on the web! You’ll be infringing on copyright laws and copying can get you and your website into serious trouble.

Instead, source legitimate places on the internet that supply free images for your use.

Free Website Images

There are three types of free images available for your website:

  • Completely free, no attribution required.
  • Free, but requiring an attribution.
  • Your own personal photos.

I prefer to use my own photos or free photos which don’t need attribution – simply because that way the reader isn’t distracted from the site content by the attribution.

If you find photos which you want to use that need an attribution that’s perfectly fine, just make sure you do post the source of the image.

Taking your own photos is also a simple process, but you do have to have the subject matter available, so it often isn’t possible. If you have a decent mobile phone camera, taking the photos when you’re out and about can become easy.

Royalty Free Images

My favourite place for looking for beautiful images is Unsplash. You’ll find countless works of art in the form of photographs – and they’re all free to use.

Unsplash for free images

But when you’re looking for something a little more basic, like an image for a traffic light for example, then Unsplash may not be the best place to go. Because Unsplash is art.

My other favourite source for royalty free Images online is

pixabay for free images

When you put in a search, be aware that the top line of pictures on this site are from Shutterstock, which is a sponsor site that will charge you for its images. To get the free images, scroll down the page.

With both Pixabay and Unsplash you can join the community and upload your own photos (if you wish) for other people to use. They’re great sharing platforms.

Once you find a picture you like, click on the image and it will open in a new screen, and to the right of the image you’ll see whether it’s available without restrictions:

Free for commercial use image

Other Image Sources

Affiliate images:

As an affiliate marketer you’re probably going to be promoting products and these will bring with them their own images, directly from the site that you’re affiliated with, such as Amazon.

Screen Shots:

As with this page, screen shots are a very important and useful way to source images that illustrate your content.

You Tube Video:

Video from YouTube is another source of imagery for you to use on your website.

How to Use Free Images in a Website

Once you’ve chosen your free image, click to download it. You’ll automatically be given an option of different sizes, with one size being recommended.

Make sure to use the right size when you post the image as large images will slow down your site. If you’re using your own images, also don’t forget to make sure they aren’t too big before uploading to your site.

On an Apple:

When you click download the picture will be pinged onto your desktop. Double click to open the picture, which will be opened by Preview.

Click on File – export. The pop-up menu will give you the option of which destination to save it to. Desktop is handy for finding it easily again and later on you can always move it into a folder. Change the format from ping to Jpeg and click save.

how to save an image

From your WordPress dashboard, place the curser where you want the image to appear and click on ‘add media’. You’ll be given the choice between a picture from your library or to upload. Click on upload and then click on the picture you have just saved to desktop.

The picture will then be uploaded into your library ready to be inserted into your page. Once is has uploaded you should give your image a relevant title, putting dashes between the words in the title and no spaces.

Fill in the alt text without dashes. Google takes notice of titles and Alt text so it’s best to fill those out before inserting into your page.

What Happens If You Get the http Error Message?

The http error message comes up in WordPress when your photo can’t be uploaded and it can be very frustrating when you’re starting out and you don’t know what’s wrong.

Common causes are the internet going off or not being fast enough, or the photo being too large, or in the wrong format.

Also check that it isn’t a problem with the browser you’re using. So if you’re using Safari and having problems, try with chrome and vice versa.

Where to Place Your Images

Once your photo is installed on your page, simply click the image and choose from the icons at the top whether to place it to the left, right or centre and the text will automatically wrap around it.

I usually prefer to have a line of text above the photo so that the photo is framed by text, but it’s a matter of personal preference. I also prefer to keep the images to the same side as a general, but not hard-set rule.

If the text is the most important aspect of your site (say a blog) the text would go on the left and the image on the right – but if you’re writing reviews, or selling products, then I’d put the image on the left and the text on the right.

For a video or a commanding image, centre would work best.

If you have any questions about adding images to your site, leave them in the comments section below and I’ll get back to you.

How to Write Good Content for Your Website

The secret of how to write good content for your website is to chat. Write Quality ContentImagine you’re talking to somebody you know. Somebody who would be interested in your topic.

When you write, use speak-talk, not formal writing talk. Keep your sentences short and keep your content relevant.

You should proof-read your post several times. Check it for spelling, for grammar and for content. Can you cut out a sentence? If yes, then do. Extra sentences don’t help anyone but it’s quite natural that a few could creep in. So don’t be scared to cut.

Although you want perfection, don’t go over-seeking it, because that can quickly turn into procrastination. You want to grow your website – procrastination is the enemy! Better to write your content from the heart and get it out there.

Remember you can and should come back and re-check it. You’ll be surprised what you’ll see when you’re looking with fresh vision.

How to Set About Writing Content for a Website

Brainstorm your topic and write out a list of sub-topics before you begin. Then, head over to Jaaxy or another good keyword tool and put the topic and each of your sub-topics into the keyword search.

Play with the topics until you find ones that are acceptable to use as titles and sub titles according to their SEO results. Click for more information on how to check for keywords.

So, now you should have a primary title and a list of secondary titles that all have reasonable scores as keywords in themselves.

Write your introduction, where you can explain what you’re going to talk about in the body of the post.

Next, write a short article about each sub-topic. That way you keep organised and cover everything you need to.

Brainstorm your topic

Break Your Text into Short Paragraphs

Most people who read the internet skim and scan for information. Everyone want results immediately.

Nobody wants to read long, heavy paragraphs, so break your posts up into around 4 lines. More than that can turn people off from reading.

Write About What You Know

You really must know your topic. Don’t choose something that you think will make money. If you don’t know enough details about it, it won’t make any money at all.

Having said that, you don’t need to feel like the world’s expert in order to be able to blog, you just have to fully give of yourself and share your opinion. You need to be able to write and write and write about your topic, so it should be something you care about.

Write from the heart. You’ll have to open up and put yourself out there for all to see. If you’re true to yourself, it will show in your words and your readers will get a sense of the real person behind the page.

Don’t Be Scared

One of the biggest hindrances for many people is FEAR. Fear of the online world, fear of putting your heart out in the open where (you feel) it could be attacked.

And fear of FAILURE.

Fear of failure hides itself in so many different costumes you may not immediately recognise it, so dig deep and throw out any fear that you find.

Overcome FearYou have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

We’re living in a time of change. A time of sharing and helping other people to find their best self. A time where everyone can claim their good fortune and help another one along the way.

And for the people who don’t agree with you, does it really matter?

How To Change Your Fear

Everyone the world over will have different opinions to you.

That’s true online or offline. It makes no difference if you post your thoughts and feelings online . . . (unless you’re trying to change other people, then they may take offence and start an argument with you).

Other than that is doesn’t matter if you’re different. That’s what makes you YOU.

To overcome any fear you need to change your beliefs on a subconscious level. When you really want to make a living online, your desire will be greater than your fear and then you’ll be able to conquer the fear forever.

Are you different to others? Of course you are! That’s why you can succeed, because what you’re sharing is going to be unique.

Sharing is selfless, not selfish. We can all share and help each other. Sharing is cool. Remember, if someone doesn’t like what you write, they can move on to another site. No problem.

So, write from the heart and enjoy it!

How to Create a Website

If you want to learn how to create a website but you don’t know where to start, this page will show you how to create a website using WordPress.

Ready to make a website

There are other platforms out there, and the two that I used before were Wix and Yahoo, but I’ve found WordPress more user-friendly and versatile than either of the other two.

You can build any type of website using WordPress: an online shop, a showcase for your photography portfolio or a blog . . .

What is WordPress?

What is wordpress

WordPress is a platform for building websites. It’s a place that makes things easy for you. In the olden days anyone who wanted to build a website would have to learn code. But that’s no longer necessary with a platform like WordPress.

WordPress has loads of pre-made designs or themes, ready for you to choose from to give your website just the look you want. Once you’ve chosen your theme, you’ll want to tweak it to make your site unique.

How to Build a New Website:

Here is a simplified list of how to build a new website:

  1. First you must decide what type of website you want to build (affiliate, review-based, blog.)
  2. Choose and register your domain name
  3. Build your website frame using WordPress.
  4. Create structural pages – About, Privacy Page & Contact Us.
  5. Research your keywords.
  6. Write great content for your pages based around your keywords.
  7. Add quality images to your content.
  8. Submit your new post to Google and Bing for faster ranking.
  9. Post your new content in your social media accounts: Facebook, Pinterest, Google + Twitter and any more that you visit.
  10. Double check your new post and also the SEO .

Once you’ve got familiar with the dashboard of WordPress (something which is made especially easy at Wealthy Affiliate because it’s broken down into steps,) you can build the skeleton of a professional website in a matter of moments.
